Tam Chantem is an associate professor in ECE at Virginia Tech. Her primary areas of research are embedded systems and cyber-physical system security, with focuses on hardware/software co-design of real-time embedded systems, energy-aware and thermal-aware system-level design, and cyber-physical systems (especially intelligent transportation systems). She is a CCI hub faculty--The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) is a Commonwealth-wide ecosystem of innovation and excellence in cyberphysical systems (CPS) with an emphasis on trust and security--and an affiliated faculty of the Hume Center for National Security and Technology, which leads Virginia Tech's research, education, and outreach programs focused on the challenges of cybersecurity and autonomy in the context of national and homeland security. Dr. Chantem also works with the VT's Office of the Vice President in the National Capital Region as a research development team leader whose responsibility is to identify and secure large research grants and contracts in strategic areas of interest, and as a researcher in the Metrolab Network, a city-university collaborative for urban innovation. Dr. Chantem's passion is to increase participation of members from under-represented groups, especially women, in computer engineering and works with Urban Alliance to help mentor high-school students who are interested in a career in STEM.

Dr. Chantem received her Ph.D. and Master's degrees from the University of Notre Dame in 2011 and 2008, respectively, and her Bachelor's degrees from Iowa State University in 2005. Before joining Virginia Tech, Dr. Chantem was an assistant professor in ECE at Utah State University. She received a U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship, Utah State University's 2016 ECE Advisor of the Year, and 2011 Outstanding Research Assistant Award from University of Notre Dame. She has also served as the TPC chair (ICESS, RTSOPS, and LPDC) and technical program committee for several top conferences such as DATE, DAC, RTAS, ECRTS, and RTSS.

When she is not working (it happens sometimes), Dr. Chantem enjoys spending time with Rocky, her German shepherd puppy.
